www.creativeguitarstudio.com Search Andrew Wasson.com for FREE lesson Handouts. This Video: May 18, 2012 | Search Videos by Title/Date. GO TO: www.andrewwasson.com Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question... Q: I've noticed that some riffs I come up with can be moved across the frets to other places. They sound cool when I do it, but I wondered if this is based on modes, or if it is something that has to do with arpeggios? If you can help me with this I'd be super grateful. I use this relocation thing a lot now, but I don't exactly know why this works. Thanks! - Jamie -- Kennesaw, GA. USA A: I need to begin by clarifying that modes and arpeggios both originate from the full scales, and this also applies to the pentatonics as well. So, that said, even though the mode and arpeggio information that you are curious about is of course important, when we use this concept of what we'll just call, "Shape Playing," we really only need to be aware of the key signature and that's pretty much about it! Using his approach is essentially low on music theory and quick to apply using only technique and your musical creativity! In the video lesson I begin on a guitar neck diagram and show just how easy this idea is to work with. Then, I move onto the fingerboard and show how a single shape can relocate and take on new melodic contour. This shape-based method, has very little focus placed upon patterns of arpeggios or modes. However, it can quickly be used to ... |

This whole discretionary notion of Guitar-teaching has lost it's appeal for me but I don't mind sharing the kinds of things I do to keep myself from flipping a nut about life. That's mostly what my music is about as well. Scales climbing a scale. |

Just playing some major, minor and pentatonic speed licks on my tele after wiring it up with Lindy Fralin pickups. Sounded amazing! Buy some... you won't be sorry! I'm also posting this for a young guitarist that ask me about how I approached scales and lead playing on an album I recently did session work on. He wanted to get his fingers moving faster...I think we all do. Not trying to be sarcastic, I had to tell him...practice, practice and more practice. Its such a personal and almost limitless instrument that I wanted to be careful about pinning him down on a single method. I defiantly know I'm not the fastest player around...I don't clam to be...Personally, I try be be very careful about over playing. I just wanted to make this to show him some of the faster licks I've borrowed over the years from my guitar icons. Sorry for the bad video quality. I'd love it if other players who see this would share some of their videos as well. |

"The Pentatonic Minor Scale" The Pentatonic Scale is a scale consisting of 5 notes (Penta =5 in greek language, tonic = tones). There is a Minor Pentatonic Scale (which I'll show you first), and there is a Major Pentatonic Scale. You may ask why you should use a scale with such a small amount of notes. The reason is that Pentatonic Scales provide a small margin for error when you are playing over a chord progression of the chords that go with the scale. Another reason to use the scale is if you are looking to find that rock sound. Jimi Hendrix used this scale more than any other. Now, it is hard to find a rock song without pentatonics in it. BB King, Clapton and many others also use the Pentatonic Scale. They use the Minor Pentatonic scale for its bluesy quality. This scale is a fairly simple introduction to scales and how scales work. It is a very commonly used scale and can be found in many popular songs, especially in classic rock, blues, hard rock, and more. Because this scale is so commonly used it is the perfect scale for you to start with. All of these positions fit together perfectly and will always be in the same order that they are here. That means that they must always be positioned together as they are and their relation to each other will never change. To play this pentatonic minor scale in any key other than A, you would have to slide the whole note diagram up or down the neck, moving all the positions together. The Pentatonic differs from many "traditional ... |
